Not surprisingly, folks are always grasping for a “cheaper” or “clever” way to do frequency conversion. One curious customer came to us recently and asked this question. “Why do I need a frequency converter?” I’ll just buy a sine wave inverter and that will do the job.”
Pretty interesting idea! Yes, a proper sine wave inverter will provide a specific voltage and frequency output. But before you embark on this “DIY” approach, it would be very wise consider what you are going to face if you take this approach to powering your cherished device.
>You will have a difficult time finding the proper voltage and frequency device where you are. We’ve tried! If you live in the USA, good luck trying to find a 230V AC 50Hz inverter. They aren’t here! And if you are able to find one, you will pay additional fees to get it to your doorstep.
>An inverter cannot provide settable frequency.
>An inverter frequency accuracy is usually 1% at best. For devices requiring exact timing, this simply isn’t going to work. If you want to power a drill or saw out in some remote location away from household power, then yes, this level of accuracy would be fine.
>You will need a BIG battery. Most inverters are designed to work with batteries. Yes, you could substitute a DC power supply if you are willing to do some electronics integration work and select a compatible power supply that will do the job.
But you will find that this may be a formidable challenge, given the instantaneous power requirements of many inverters AND the electronic device you may be trying to power. At the end of the day, after you’ve solved all of the problems, the power supply may just be more expensive than the inverter!
>Packaging, packaging, packaging. Do you want a sine wave inverter designed to work at a camp site, a bundle of wires, and an open-frame power supply next to your expensive turntable and tube preamplifier?
>You will not get quality isolation. You just won’t because this isn’t what inverters are designed for. So be prepared for high-frequency ground loops and all the associated noise problems.
It’s similar to the philosophy behind a smart phone. You could buy a wall telephone, a camera, audio recorder, video camera, a BIG battery, and carry all of those around with you. Or you could buy a smart phone. Why buy the pieces and put together a DIY “frequency converter” when it is infinitely easier to buy a well-thought out, attractive KCC Scientific product that works perfectly and is integrated elegantly?
Of course, we are not considering the quality of the inverter here, either. Many are a serious source of electromagnetic noise. Others are audibly noisy.
